How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Photographer for Your Big Day
Your wedding day will be filled with precious memories, and finding the right photographer to capture them is essential. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect wedding photographer:
Define the style you like
Do you love candid, documentary-style photos, or are you drawn to fine art photography with dreamy, editorial vibes? Browse portfolios online to find a style that resonates with you. You can view my wedding portfolio here: Weddings and my editorial/commercial projects here: Work
Set a budget
Photography is one of the most important wedding investments. Set a realistic budget and prioritize what’s most important to you—such as albums, prints, or extended coverage.
Ask your photographer about payment schedules and deposits and what their refund policy in case there’s an emergency or the date needs to be rescheduled.
Meet in person or virtually
A photographer will be by your side throughout the day, so you must feel comfortable with them. Schedule a meeting to discuss your vision and ensure you connect well. My favorite couples to work with have always been ones that we met beforehand for coffee or even just a phone call.
Bonus points if you can book an engagement session with your photographer as a trial run.
Review their post-production style
Editing styles vary widely—from light and airy to dark and moody. Make sure their editing matches the aesthetic you want for your photos. I come from a hybrid film/digital photography background so my approach is to edit in a style that preserves the day and personality/style of the couple.
Review their other work (if available)
Do the photographers you’re looking at feature other work in their portfolio outside of wedding photography? A multi-disciplined photographer will have the skills required to tackle a big day like a wedding. Photographing a wedding requires documentary, portrait, and even some commercial photography skills to capture the full day.
