Myles Apparel - Elements Jacket

What better time to shoot a dark and rainy themed photoshoot than on one of the brightest and warmest days of our weird California “winter.” To be fair, I would choose this over the 9°F and snowstorms currently hitting all my family and friends in the midwest. While we don’t have much snow (or any!) here in the Bay, we do have a surprising amount of rain. If you're planning on vacationing here, bring a jacket; this is not LA. Maybe also an umbrella, or in this case, a Myles Apparel Elements Jacket.

Myles Apparel is one of my favorite athletic apparel companies, and it’s been such an honor to work with them. Their mission started with “a better pair of shorts” that quickly turned into a better pair of everything else. Their latest iteration of perfecting your wardrobe is without a doubt one of the best rain jackets I’ve ever worn. It’s soft, breathable, and, most importantly, dry. We wanted to create a set of images that were slightly different from their normal lineup with some “in-studio” looks. When I say “in-studio,” I mean in my backyard with a hose.

With the sun being so bright, it took a minute to dial in the right settings, but with the help of a big ass diffuser and a strong ND filter, we got the sun under control.

On top of photography, most of the day was focused on video. I’ve slowly been dipping my toes into the video world and finding the water warmer and warmer every time. This was a simple setup with the focus on highlighting different elements of the Elements Jacket. For photography, I went for a slight split tone to give the look of a just-passed rainstorm with the sun setting off to camera right. The light source was cool bounce ambient light (camera left) and a strobe through a 60in octabox on camera right.

Below is the promo video features the jacket, and at the bottom are a few of my favorite images from the day, along with some mockups from their campaign.
